Doctor Who Goes Updated Retro

In this season's brilliant Christmas special, The Snowmen, Doctor Whoshowcased a number of new features and introductions. There was the new companion, Clara, for one, but while she was technically introduced in the season premiere, Asylum of the Daleks, the companion Clara still hasn't been introduced. This is a bit of timey-whimeyness and a bit of Steven Moffat toying with the audience (**spoilers** Clara Oswin Oswald made an appearance in both episodes, but didn't make it out alive in either). So while we've got months to discuss this new companion and the mystery surrounding her, here are some of the other changes to Doctor Who:

New opening titles:

This opening title sequence still ties in with the new series, but pays homage to the classic series with the stars and having the Doctor's face appear in space. Really enjoyed this new look.

The Tardis:

The biggest change, besides a new companion, is the new look Tardis exterior with worn paint and the completely revamped interior:

While it looks streamlined compared to Matt Smith's previous interior, there is a lot going on here. It will take a few viewings to really get a feel for it, but at first look, I like it. I can see how some fans who've only seen the new series may not care for it, but many classic series fans had a hard time at first with the coral look that has been a staple over the past few years.

This new look definitely is a nod to the classic series. Here's a look at the Tardis interior over the years to get a feel for how the look has changed in subtle or drastic ways over the years.

New costume:

He still has a bowtie, but everything else was changed for this episode. Is this a one-off look or is the Professor Indiana Jones look gone for good? Matt Smith enjoys having the Doctor wear hats, so the top hat was a nice touch. We'll see where they go with the costume, but as we see in the coming soon trailer, it looks like different variations of his outfit may be coming. Remember, David Tennant wore multiple suits during his time as the Doctor and Tom Baker went through a few variations of his basic look, so changing Smith's outfit isn't a big change for the series as long as they never forget, bow ties are cool:

Matt Smith Coming Back for Doctor Who Season 7

There's constant speculation surrounding the current and future actors playing The Doctor on Doctor Who. Ever since Matt Smith took the role, people have wondered how long he'll stay on. Yesterday, it was confirmed that he will indeed be back next season and that is great news for Who fans. Smith has taken the reigns of The Doctor and has never looked back. People were skeptical on whether he could follow David Tennant, but he's more than followed him. He is The Doctor.

Doctor Who Christmas Special Trailer

Series 5 of the "new" Doctor Who, featuring the 11th Doctor Matt Smith and show runner Steven Moffat, upped the ante on everything the new series was under Russell T. Davies. Smith was great as the Doctor and followed fan favorite David Tennant brilliantly. The show gained momentum throughout the season and ended with an exciting finale. So what's next for Who fans? The Christmas special, of course:

Doctor Who?

If you've stumbled across this blog, you'll see that I post mostly about my favorite sports teams: the Saints, Hornets, Braves and LSU. But you'll also see that I'm a huge Lost fan, so during the season I post recaps of episodes. The blog has also expanded to my other interests, including Doctor Who.

Now many of you probably aren't familiar with the 900+ year old timelord. Doctor Who is a British show, which plays on the Sci Fi channel here in the U.S. I've only been watching for a few years thanks to my best friend Josh, who is a lifelong fan of the show. If you're a sci fi fan, it's a fun series to watch.

Since Matt Smith has been named as the 11th Doctor, Doctor Who has been in the news worldwide recently. If you'd like to get to know a little more about the 1o other actors to play the role, check out Wired's article on the show.

New Doctor Who: Matt Smith

Matt Smith was named the 11th Doctor this weekend. He'll be taking over the TARDIS for David Tennant in 2010 and at age 26, he'll be the youngest actor ever to play the Doctor. Other than that, I do not know much about him.

I watched the Doctor Who Confidential interview on youtube (see below) and will wait to see what direction he takes the character before forming an opinion. I know there are already people complaining that he's too young and they don't like the choice. But there were also people complaining about Tennant's selection as well and now he's one of the most beloved actors ever to play the part. Oh well, you can't make everyone happy.

I do know that I'm excited to see where Steven Moffat takes the series. He has written some of the best episodes of the new series and with him in charge, the show can go in any direction.

Doctor #11 Coming Soon

There's been a ton of speculation as to who would replace David Tennant as the Doctor on Doctor Who, almost as soon as Tennant took the role a few years ago. Now all the speculation as to when Tennant will actually leave the series can come to an end, as he himself has confirmed that the 2009 specials will be his last as the Doctor.

Rumors have been going strong over the past few weeks as to who will be Doctor #11, including Paterson Joseph, who would become the first black doctor. Fans are mixed as to who should be the replacement, but the same thing happened when each actor left the series.

I for one will be sad to see Tennant's tenure end. I didn't grow up watching Doctor Who but came to love the new series (and have since gone back and checked out the classics). As a lot of fans have said about the first doctor they watched, Tennant is my doctor. He has become a fan favorite, dispite a small bit of concern from the fan base when he took over for Christopher Eccleston.

It all depends on who you got into the series watching, and for me, it was Tennant. I can't wait for the 2009 specials to see how he finishes his time as the Doctor. He is a life-long fan of the show, so he will definitely go out in style.

So who do you think will be the next Doctor?
