The Saints have announced their first roster cuts to trim the roster to 75 before the Aug. 26 deadline: FB Kevin Dudley, WR Todd Blythe, S Curome Cox, C Rob Hunt and P Waylon Prather. Dudley was the only player on the list who had seen extensive playing time in the preseason and he was on the Saints practice squad throughout last season.
The only surprise with these cuts is that Jason David's name isn't among them. Many Saints fans have been speculating that he'll be among the first cuts, but he lasts at least another week. With CBs Usama Young and Randall Gay still dinged up, the team needs all the players at corner and David gets at least one more shot to show that he can make this team. He'll have to show a lot to the home crowd against Miami or he'll hear the boo birds again.
After the next preseason game, the team will have to trim the roster down to 53 players and there will be some tough cuts to make, especially at receiver, offensive line and corner.
